The Appalacchians

Washington and the Barber Museum following the Appalachian Mountains The Appalachian Mountain range is located primarily in the United States (USA) but extends from southeastern Canada, forming a 160 to 480 km wide area that extends from the island of Newfoundland 2,400 km southwest to the center of the United States, in Alabama. The average elevation of the Appalachians is approximately 1,000 meters, with the highest peak, Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, at approximately 2,000 meters. The range covers nearly 30 Canadian provinces and US states. The term Appalachian derives from a name the first Spanish heard: it was the name of an indigenous tribe, the Apalchen, but perhaps also Apache! This is so controversial that until recently they were called Alleghenies, up to a certain point, and then Appalachians, partly because the pronunciation varies depending on the dialects of the various states. That’s all been said and done with history and geography, but we’re interested in the roads, landscapes, and possible visits to a part of the USA decidedly seldom visited by Europeans. With Washington and the Barber Museum our itinerary begins in Washington, formally the District of Columbia and also known as D.C. or simply Washington, the capital of the United States. It is located on the Potomac River on the border with Maryland and Virginia, where Congress held its first session in 1800. The city took its name from George Washington, the first president of the United States and a founding father. It takes its name from Columbia, a female personification of the nation, often overlooked for the more fashionable and glamorous New York. But Washington is the capital of the United States, the true American charm, the history of the United States, the allure of the American middle and upper classes with the White House and the Capitol, the true “American dream.” The journey from Washington to the Berber Museum takes us along spectacular roads at an ideal time of year, with the colors of the forests changing daily. We pass through the Shenandoah National Park, the Smoky Mountains, and Blue Ridge Park, the famous Tail of the Dragon, and visit the Jack Daniel’s distillery with its famous bourbon. We then reach Birmingham to attend the 2025 Barber Motorshow, a spectacle no motorcyclist should miss at least once in their lifetime. The museum alone is worth the trip. We’ll return the rental motorcycles in Atlanta, leaving us with a day to explore the city, including the spectacular aquarium and the Coca-Cola factory. What more could you ask for? Join us!
